Kalaw
Kalaw is located 70 km west of Taungyi , about halfway
along the Thazi – Taungyi road . It was a popular hill station in the British
days and it is still a peaceful and quiet place . The population is a mix of
Shan , Indian Muslims , Burma and Nepalis ( Gurkhas retired from British
military service ) . It is about two hours west of Nyaungshwe ,
Kalaw was founded as a hill station by British durng
colonial rule , at the height of 1320 metres , the climate was a cool escape
from the sweltering heat of the tropics .
The popular places of Kalaw are Hnee Paya ( Bamboo Strip
Lacquer Buddha Image ) , Shwe U Min Pagoda . Hnee Paya is sutuated in Pinmagon
Monastery of Pinmagon Village , Kalaw Township , South of Shan State . It might
established in First Inn – wa Period over 500 years ago , 8 ' 4 " High .
Shwe U Min Pagoda is 30 – minute walk south of the town center .
Another places of interest are Thein Taung Pagoda , Aung
Chan Tha Pagoda , Su Taung Pyae Pagoda and The King Church .
